Grom Environment & Community Engagement Competition
Made possible by a generous grant from ATHENS SERVICES
Purpose
To encourage our groms to:
Engage in their community
Exhibit sportsmanship
Protect and celebrate our coastal environment
Eligibility
Open to VSA members K–12. Not just our surfers.
Must be an active member during the 2025/26 season
Scholarship funds available for families with financial need
Contest Format
Runs October 1, 2025 – May 22, 2026
Participants will be evaluated on:
Community Involvement – volunteering, helping, and attending VSA events
Sportsmanship – conduct in and out of the water; respect for peers, coaches, and community
Environmental Project – submission of a project relating to the coastal environment
Examples include (but are not limited to): Beach cleanup initiative
Short film or photography project
Art piece or creative installation
Essay or awareness campaign
VSA Board Members Stan and Alix will help guide interested contestants toward organizations and activities focused on Coastal Resilience.
Prizes
Four winners will each receive $750
2 winners from high school & 2 winners from grades K–8
Winners chosen by the VSA Board based on participation and project submission
Rules & Requirements
Must attend at least 2 VSA events during the year
Environmental project due Friday, May 22, 2026
Projects may be solo or group (prize shared if group)
Winners announced at the VSA Anniversary Party (TBD) in early June, around World Oceans Day
By participating, contestants grant VSA permission to share projects on our website and social media
Judging Criteria
Community Involvement
Consistent volunteerism, positive contributions at VSA events, community engagement
Sportsmanship
Respect, fairness, encouragement of peers, positive conduct in and out of the water
Environmental Project
Creativity – originality and innovative ideas
Effort & Execution – time, dedication, and quality of work
Impact & Relevance – contribution to coastal/environmental stewardship and awareness
